Can they explain what they wrote?

AI can write the essay. Viva Voce asks each student about ten questions on their own essay, out loud, and gives the teacher a transcript and a rubric score to grade from.

How it works

Students defend their essay out loud to an AI examiner; the teacher decides the grade.

AI writes essays now, so colleges are turning back to oral exams. Viva Voce reads each student’s essay, questions them about it by voice, and scores whether they understood their own work. The teacher gets the transcript, the rubric score and any flags, and decides every grade.

  1. Step 01

    Writes questions from each essay

The examiner reads the essay a student submitted and writes questions about that essay, not a generic quiz.

  2. Step 02

Runs a spoken viva, about ten questions

Each student answers out loud to an AI examiner, the way a viva works, and has to explain their own work.

  3. Step 03

    Hands the teacher a transcript

The teacher gets the full transcript, a rubric score and any flags, and decides the grade.

What you get

Built for high-school and community-college teachers.

01

A viva for every essay

An AI oral exam for the whole class, run on the essays students already handed in.

02

A full transcript

Every question and answer, so you can read exactly what each student said.

03

A rubric score with flags

Each viva scored against a rubric, with flags where an answer suggests the student did not know their own essay.

First up: We start with a free ten-student pilot for teachers who want to try it with one class.

Why now

The world just changed.

What changed, and where it was reported.

  1. NYU Stern ran AI-conducted oral exams for two groups of 36 and 37 students and published the results in CACM in 2026.

    arXiv
  2. Colleges are turning to oral exams to fight AI-written homework.

What a person does

The teacher reads the transcript and decides every grade: the AI only scores and flags. Schools sign data-privacy agreements first, because minors’ voices fall under FERPA and COPPA.

Does the AI give the final grade?

No. It writes the questions, runs the interview and scores against a rubric. The teacher reads the transcript and decides every grade.

What about students’ voices and data?

Many students are minors, so their voice data needs care. We work under your school’s data-privacy agreement, with FERPA and COPPA in mind.

Aren’t there plenty of AI graders already?

Yes, it is a crowded field. Viva Voce does one job: a spoken defence of a student’s own essay, for one teacher and one class at a time.
